Scottish Words – A

Here is the first of a series of occasional posts on Scots or dialect words commonly used in Scotland.

• Aiken for oaken, which is still seen in place names.
• Ashet for a shallow dish; now usually refers to a type of meat pie made in it.
• Auld for old.
• Aye for yes.
